Practical guidance

What this tool does

Rent Split Calculator divides monthly rent, utilities and other shared costs between roommates or household members. It can split costs equally, by room size, or by custom percentages entered by the group.

When to use it

Use it when a household needs a transparent starting point for discussing shared rent and monthly costs. It is especially useful before a move, after utilities change, or when a new roommate joins.

Example use

For example, enter 1,500 rent, 180 utilities and 70 other shared costs for three people. Choose equal split for a simple division, room-size split when bedrooms differ, or custom percentages if the household already agreed on shares.

How this tool works

The calculator adds rent, utilities and other shared costs, then applies the selected split method. Equal split divides the total evenly, room-size split uses each room's share of total room area, and custom split uses percentages that must add up to 100%.

Limitations

The result is a planning helper and does not resolve legal, lease or roommate disputes. It does not judge room quality, private agreements, deposits, late fees, local tenant rules or whether a split is fair for every situation.

Privacy note

The tool does not require an account and the entered form data is processed in your browser for the core tool output.

FAQ

Which split method should we choose?

Equal split is the simplest option when rooms are similar. Splitting by room size fits flats where rooms differ a lot, and custom percentages work when your household has already agreed its own arrangement.

How does the room-size split work?

Each person's share of the rent is proportional to the room area you enter, so a 15 m2 room pays more than a 10 m2 room while the shared costs stay divided across everyone.

Can we include utilities and other shared bills?

Yes. Add utilities and recurring shared bills, and the summary shows each person's total including their part of the shared costs, which makes monthly transfers easier to agree.

Are the amounts sent to a server?

No. Rent, bills and percentages are calculated in your browser, and the numbers you enter are not uploaded to a ToolForge Online server.
